As a leader, when confronted with challenges, do you persistently push forward, fueled by the conviction that success awaits just past the next hurdle? Or do you take a moment to stop, reflect, and reevaluate your direction?

We frequently discuss leadership, yet we don't focus enough on effective leadership. Not all leadership propels people forward.

During a recent team meeting at the beginning of The Light Board Project, I observed something subtle yet significant. The sighs, the hesitation, and the quiet indicators of feeling overwhelmed and uncertain about the magnitude of the work that lies ahead were evident.

These moments matter.

As leaders, our responsibility extends beyond just outcomes; we must also be attentive to the signals, both verbal and non-verbal, that our teams communicate. Feedback is not always straightforward and can manifest through energy, body language, or silence.

At that moment, I faced a decision: either encourage the team to continue moving forward despite the existing tension, or pause to reflect and tackle the underlying issues.

I chose to pause.

Good leadership isn't about pushing for progress when things aren't going well. It's having the discernment to know when to advance and when to make adjustments. This required making changes, not to slow the mission, but to strengthen it by safeguarding team spirit, alignment, and long-term impact.

The Dual Nature of Leadership: Direction and Listening

Leadership can involve giving guidance, but it also requires listening. There are moments when those we lead offer us direction, and during such times, leadership transforms into service. At Active Leaders of Love, we believe leadership must be ethical, compassionate, and responsive. It requires listening, adapting, and moving forward with people, not over them.

Effective leadership creates systems, processes, and environments that address the needs of the group, both within teams and in the communities we serve.

The way we lead affects the outcomes we create.
